100 Days Smarter!

  Celebrating the 100th Day of school in Mrs. Ramirez's kindergarten classroom!!!!! We know how to have some fun! 

Welcoming in my smarties...100 days of school means 100 days smarter! 

We then made 10 paper chains with 10 links...so 100 links in all! I hung them from the door so the students could be reminded how much smarter they are each time they walk through the door! 

Students also did 100 day art work where they used the numerals 1-0-0 to design masterpieces all of their own! Here are some examples :) 

Students also made 100 year old portraits of themselves! They turned out adorable! 

Then, because we hadn't done enough 100th day Art...we painted 100 dots (10 dots of 10 different colors)!! The best part about the painting, was that the kiddos got to use their fingers AND...they got to wipe off the paint right on to their paint shirt! I think that was the highlight of the day for them! haha

We also did some dressing up! Because what would the 100th day of school be like without 100 year old men and women?!?!?! Some of our teachers dressed up and so did some of the students!

At the end of the day, I took the kiddo's pictures and put them into my "old fart booth" app to make the kiddos look like they were truly 100 years old in the face...here is an example! Before (dressed up like she is 100) and After (put through a time warp)! 

I did this for every student! It was comical! and the kiddos loved it! 

I even did a before and after of myself just for fun! 

 

100 Days of school = 100 days of fun, 100 days of love, 100 days of learning, 100 days of knowledge and 100 days of getting to know one another!

Details and nice work

Yes, I know I have been MIA since the beginning of the school year. I want to apologize for that. I had some personal things going on toward the end of summer and beginning of the school year and felt that my family should come first. Now that I am somewhat back on track…even with this CRAZY winter…I am hoping to get a blog post up once a week!

Have you been having a crazy winter as well??? We have already used up our 5 emergency days because of the cold weather. It seems like it snows, gets super cold, snows again, gets super cold, and snows again and super cold. It is the cycle that will not end!!! How many snow emergency days have you used??

Well, since we have come back from Christmas break, I don't think we have even had a full school week yet! Thus, possibly the reason my students’ coloring has reverted back to what it was at the beginning of the school year…TERRIBLE! I have done several mini lessons on coloring throughout the first semester but this time; I finally made an anchor chart to hang up in the classroom. (DUH…why wouldn’t I have done this a long time ago???? I had done examples in all my mini-lessons but never made a chart!!)

My kiddos helped me make the anchor charts telling me what was acceptable and what was not. Now that they have this visual, there is no excuse for scribbling!

We have also been talking about using details in our pictures; another skill that kind of has been forgotten about. So, again, we worked together to make another anchor chart. We had the discussion about how illustrators of picture books, work really hard to make the pictures match the words in the book. Sometimes, if authors don’t make detailed pictures in their books, it makes those hard vocabulary words difficult to sound out. Then, we compare this to their journal writing or mini-book writing…if students don’t draw detailed pictures, it may be hard to go back and re-read later.

We have had such a busy week and it is only Wednesday! We have been trying to play catch up since we have had so many days off, today was a 2-hour delay and Friday is the 100^th day of school! Celebrating the 100th Day of School!

We celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday! 

The kiddos and a few of us teachers really enjoyed ourselves! This year we tried something new, different, and exciting! We decided to dress up to look like we were 100 years old. So before the big 100th day, I talked to my students about what we might look like when we are that old. Kindergartners have a difficult time understanding age so I told them to think about what their Great-Grandma or Grandpa looks like (even though some great grandparents may still be pretty young, the point still got across to most of them). The kiddos came up with things like: Gray hair, white hair, no hair, wheel chair, cane, and wrinkles. There was some great brainstorming going on but I could tell they weren't quite clear on the type of clothes that one might wear. So I gave them some ideas.

Although many of my boys looked really great and did a wonderful job dressing the part with canes, vests, suspenders, glasses and fake facial hair,  I must say that my one little guy with the orange button up shirt on took the cake! His parents literally SHAVED the top of his head and just left hair around the sides, like he was balding!!!! and then painted on a gray mustache! Hilarious and so creative!

Our fun didn't stop there though, 

 we continued by making some 100 day art! We made self portraits of ourselves at 100 years old using construction paper, scissors and glue! Oh and we can't forget the googly eyes!

 To top off our already exciting day, we had marshmallow fun!

First each student had a sheet of paper with 10 circles on it. Their job was to count out 10 marshmallows for each circle...eating a few along the way of course! Then we counted by 10's.  They were so excited that they had 100 marshmallows on their paper, they were literally bouncing off their seats!  Once we had counted out 100 marshmallows, I handed out toothpicks and let them make their very own "MARSHMALLOW CREATIONS". They had to use their imagination and of course they had to fuel that imagination with more marshmallows down the hatch!

And so with this came the end of the 100th day of school full of fun, laughter and lots of learning!
